Robert Indiana’s (American, 1928-2018), “Hartley Elegies” were a series of 18 paintings Indiana created from 1989-1994. They were inspired by American artist Marsden Hartley’s War Motif series, which was dedicated to a young WWI German soldier Karl von Freyburg whom Hartley had a friendship with until he perished in the war.  In this print Indiana references the classic JFK quote “Ich bin ein Berliner” - I am a Berliner, from his speech in Berlin. Indiana ties himself into the print with the quote “Der Amerikanische Maler”, which translates to “The American Painter”.
