Marc Chagall (Russian/French, 1887-1985), took a trip in 1931 to the Holy Land, which shook his perspective, spiritually and creatively. In 1960 he created Drawings from the Bible, consisting of 24 color lithographs illustrative carious scenes from the Bible. Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah and window of both of his dead sons. An ancient jewish law required Tamar to marry Judah's youngest son, but Judah does not permit her to do so. Tamar then decides to disguise herself, which is why she is always depicted with a veil covering her face.
