French artist Claude Vernard uses a technique called impasto to create physical texture and visual dimension to his paintings. This Cubist depiction of a still life with a sunflower in a vase and a bowl of fruit is simple on its own, but the textured paint adds new dimension to what would be an otherwise flat composition. Vernard has used color very selectively to imply that the vase and flower are alone illuminated by a single beam of sunlight. Provenance: Galerie Felix Vercel, New York.
