In 1984, Robert Rauschenberg established ROCI (Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange) as the artist's commitment to international peace during a time of political strife, believing that "one-to-one contact through art" would lead to an understanding between people over issues of culture. After having worked collaboratively in 1972 on a project at Graphicstudio, Rauschenberg and Donald Saff joined forces once again in 1990 while Rauschenberg was with ROCI and Saff was with his own company, Saff Tech Arts. As trained artists and printmakers, the two men created a series of work based on the ROCI trip to Kuala Lumpur and the tin houses in which the inhabitants lived. Printed from 1990-1993, the series featureds highly-reflective steel slabs with screenprinted images superimposed over them in a bold and striking manner that further elevated the careers of both Rauschenberg and Saff after their exhibition of the works at the NGA of Washington.
