Ashkelon XVIII is a C-print from the Ashkelon Portfolio, a series of 20 photographs by Stephen Shore (b. 1947) made at the ancient archaeological site of Ashkelon, Israel in 1994, printed at Laumont Photographics in 2006. The image presents a view of the ancient coastal city of Ashkelon in southern Israel, the remains of the site and its surrounding landscape set within Shore's precise black-and-white frame — topography, light, and the trace of history rendered with the same direct visual intelligence he applied to American roads and towns.
