Jean Hélion was a French painter (1904 - 1987) whose abstract work of the 1930's established him as a leading modernist. His mid-career rejection of abstraction was followed by nearly five decades as a figurative painter. He was also the author of several books and an extensive body of critical writing. This image was conceived in 1939 and the lithograph edition was printed in 1975. The print is hand-signed and numbered in pencil from the edition of 150.
