Field of Marble is a gelatin silver print from On the Acropolis, a portfolio of 25 photographs by Tod Papageorge made on the Athenian Acropolis in the summers of 1983 and 1984. The image depicts a close view of scattered marble architectural fragments — Ionic capitals with carved volutes, fluted column sections upright and fallen, plain stone blocks of various sizes — roped off against a clear, blank sky, with no human figures in the frame. Signed, titled, numbered and dated in pencil on verso.
