Infamous art forger David Stein was implicated multiple times for selling faked works of art by renown artists. In his later years, in order to avoid further lawsuits, he began titling his pieces "In the Manner of..." so that it was clear he was merely emulating the style of the artist, not forging it. He did, however, continue to make forgeries in secret for the rest of his life. This piece is done in the style of Gauguin and features that artist's signature flat planes of bright primary colors and a tropical setting.
