Ashkelon XVII is a C-print from the Ashkelon Portfolio, a series of 20 photographs by Stephen Shore (b. 1947) made at the ancient archaeological site of Ashkelon, Israel in 1994, printed at Laumont Photographics in 2006. The image presents a view of the ancient coastal city of Ashkelon in southern Israel, its layers of archaeological history and coastal landscape observed with Shore's clear, unhurried attention — the ruins and sky composing a still, factual image in the tradition of his American site photographs.
