Approaching the Parthenon is a gelatin silver print from On the Acropolis, a portfolio of 25 photographs by Tod Papageorge made on the Athenian Acropolis in the summers of 1983 and 1984. The image depicts a field of scattered marble architectural fragments — column drums, carved capitals, and dressed stone blocks — roped off with wire across the plateau, a small group of tourists visible in silhouette against the bright sky in the middle distance. Signed, titled, numbered and dated in pencil on verso.
