April 9th is a screenprint on Arches by Colombian artist Fernando Oramas, from the Graficario de la Lucha Popular en Colombia — a 1977 portfolio of 32 works by 32 Colombian artists aimed at bearing witness to popular struggle and effecting social change, with proceeds from sales supporting the Colombian Communist Party. Executed in 1955 and printed in 1977, the print commemorates the Bogotazo of April 9, 1948, depicting a battlefield of fallen figures and red flags with a military tank advancing past a burning cityscape and church tower in a dark, smoldering palette. Signed, numbered XXVII/XLV, and dated in pencil.
