Ashkelon XVI is a C-print from the Ashkelon Portfolio, a series of 20 photographs by Stephen Shore (b. 1947) made at the ancient archaeological site of Ashkelon, Israel in 1994, printed at Laumont Photographics in 2006. The image presents a view of the ancient coastal city of Ashkelon in southern Israel, the site's ruins, terrain, and Mediterranean light rendered in black-and-white with Shore's characteristic economy of observation — the archaeological subject meeting the formal discipline of his large-format practice.
