In a departure from his usual Surrealist style, Salvador Dalí (Spanish, 1904-1989) created this series, "Our Historical Heritage" a figurative series of historical Hebrew figures, after moving New York. They feature almost comical renderings, figures with large eyes and bright colors. This etching centers on Jonah who was told by God to go to Ninevah, but instead, he embarked on a sea voyage. After being caught in a storm, he willingly goes overboard and is swallowed by the whale.
