One of four prints in Donald Sultan's 2008 portfolio Trumpet March, Red Trumpet is as striking a piece of minimalist art as it is quintessentially Sultan. While often classified as still lifes, Sultan maintains that his works (despite their representational subjects—flowers, lemons, eggs, buttons) are first and foremost abstract. Red Trumpet is notable for its vivacity, uniquely textured printing, and emphasis on space that draws attention to both the negative and positive aspects of the image.
