Placing the iconic image created by the famous artist in the background, Deem creates a similar female figure with a lace cap tied around her neck and a deep green dress cloaking her figure. Staring off into the distance, Deem's female lacemaker contrasts with the yellow-and-gold toned rendering of Vermeer's lacemaker in the back, who nearly blends into the background.
